DAY 1 - ARRIVE VIENGXAY

Border – Viengxay: 2 hours

After completing the custom formalities at the border, a tour guide and driver will be waiting to greet and take you to Viengxay.

Viengxay is a town featuring hundreds of caves which acted as a shelter during the Vietnam/American War. Between 1964 and 1973, when Laos was caught up in the middle of the conflict, more than 20,000 people lived in a 'hidden city' built inside these limestone caves.

Through the audio information, you will learn all about the hidden city through interviews from locals who lived during the period.

Continue the journey to Sam Neua and checkin at the hotel upon your arrival.

DAY 2 - VIENGXAY - SAM NEUA - VIENGTHONG (B / L)

Viengxay – Sam Neua Sam Neua – Vieng Thong (Breakfast & Lunch included)

After breakfast, begin your day with a short city tour of Sam Neua. Have a chance to wander around local markets to see the unique Houaphanh textiles and other interesting local arts.

Enjoy delicious lunch at a local restaurant on the way to Viengthong.
Upon arrival in Vieng Thong, visit the visitor centre of Nam Et Phou Louey to learn about the National Protected Area and its tourism project.

Nam Et Phou Louey (pronounced ‘naam et poo loo-ee’) National Protected Area (NPA) is located in the north-east of Laos is the largest national park in the country (4,229 km2), covering seven districts and three provinces. The area is home to a large forest that holds a high level of biodiversity, including a lot of endangered species.

Spend the rest of the day at your own leisure. Stay the night in Viengthong.


DAY 3 - NAM NERN NIGHT SAFARI (B / L / D)

Vieng Thong – Ban Son Koua: 1 hour (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)

After breakfast, start the day with visit to the Ban Son Koua.

Upon arrival, a local guide and boatman will be be there to greet and take you to a short tour of the village. Continue the journey on the Nam Nern River by longtail boat where you can spot local wildlife and learn about the region’s rice cultivation along the way.

Once you arrive at the park, have lunch that is prepared by the village cooking group. Continue the tour by understand the efforts and work park staff have to put towards protecting tigers and their food chain.

The night safari begins with the stopping at a spot and hear from the local guide on how to track deer and other wild animals.

Go up the river to arrive at the dinner area, where chairs and tables are replaced with a sandy, flat bank to create a memorable picnic dinner around a cozy campfire. After dinner, enjoy the Khmu folktales from your guide and talk about the animal you saw during the excursion.

A night tour after dark is next with the boat turning off its engine so you can spot sights of nocturnal animals along the river bank such as Sambar Deer, Otters, Barking Deer, and various species of Civets, Slow Loris, Porcupine and Owls.

Come back to the evening camp for some more sights of exotic insects. Stay the night in Nam Nern.


DAY 4 - NONG KHIAW - LUANG PRABANG (B / L)

Nam Nern – Nong Khiaw (210 km): 4 hours (Breakfast & Lunch included)

You’ll get to have the morning walk in the jungle to learn about the use of medicinal plants from your local guides. Jump back on the boat after breakfast and float towards the village with the engines off. Spot sights of various birds along the way with the guide identifying their differences.

Taste some “lao hai” (earthen jar rice wine) at the village. Fill out the wildlife monitoring form that is used to monitor wildlife abundance and indicate how much you would like to put into the village development fund from the tour costs. It’s a crucial key to the success of the project as locals have a real incentive to preserve their wildlife and the habitat.

(Note: Though it is quite rare, if groups are lucky enough to spot a tiger, they may be asked to pay an additional 1,800,000 Kip (roughly $225) per sighting per group.)

Continue to visit the sleepy town of Nong Khiaw after lunch.

Arrive in the late afternoon and enjoy the rest of the day at your own leisure.

Stay the night at Nong Khiaw.


DAY 5 - NONG KHIAW - LUANG PRABANG (B / L)

Nong Khiaw – Nam Ou dam by car (70 km): 2,5 hours Nam Ou dam – Luang Prabang by boat (50 km): 2 hours Luang Prabang – Luang Prabang Airport (4 km): 15 min (Breakfast & Lunch included)

After breakfast, head towards Luang Prabang where you witness the amazing sun set view over the city and surrounding hills at the top of Mount Phousi.

Stop at the hill tribe evening market for some leisure walk around and shopping before returning to the hotel.

Enjoy an evening at your own pace.

DAY 6 - LUANG PRABANG - CITY TOUR (B / L)

After breakfast, begin the city tour of Luang Prabang with a visit to Wat Visoun, the holiest temple of the city, followed by the 16th century Wat Aham and Wat That, where the ashes of King Sisavang Vong are kept inside the large central stupa.

The next site is the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Center where you get to know all about local hill tribes in Laos.

Enjoy lunch at Tamarind Restaurant, one of the most popular eateries in Luang Prabang. In the afternoon, visit the National Museum which is formerly the Royal Palace. Then walk to Wat Mai, a temple renowned for its golden bas-relief, and Wat Sensoukarahm, featuring a beautiful golden façade.

Conclude the city tour at Wat Xieng Thong, the most revered temple in Luang Prabang that was built in 1560 by King Setthathirat and is decorated with ornate carvings and mosaics.

DAY 7 - LUANG PRABANG - KUANG SI WATERFALL - LUANG PRABANG (B)

Luang Prabang – Kuang Si Waterfalls (32 km): 45 min (Breakfast included)

Watch the monks collecting alms at dawn (optional activity for early risers). As the sun begins to rise, long lines of orange-robed monks leave their pagodas and walk barefoot down the streets collecting offerings from Luang Prabang residents.It is a beautiful, serene ceremony that highlights the spiritualism of the Laos people. Return to the hotel for breakfast.

After breakfast at the hotel, transport by car to the Kuang Si Waterfalls. The journey there is filled with beautiful landscapes of rice fields, hills and small villages.

Upon arrival to Kuang Si Waterfall, you will see the jungle and dense woods surrounding the falls are perfect for exploring on foot. For the adventurous, it is possible to walk to the top of the falls via a steep track where stunning views await.

At the base of the falls, there is also the opportunity to swim in the turquoise pools below.

(Note: If bathing, please wear a sarong to avoid showing too much skin.)

Visit the the bear sanctuary next to the falls if you don’t feel like swimming. Make a final stop at the Kuang Si Butterfly Park to see hundreds of exotic butterflies calling the beautiful garden their habitats.

Return to Luang Prabang and enjoy the rest of the day at your own leisure.

DAY 8 - LUANG PRABANG - DEPARTURE (B)

Luang Prabang – Luang Prabang Airport (4 km): 15 min (Breakfast included)

Enjoy breakfast and walk around town or do some last minute souvenir shopping before your guide and driver arrive at the hotel to take you to the airport.
